Friday at Jossi Design HQ

I'm not entirely sure what happened to the week, it still feels like yesterday was Monday to me. Regardless, I'm not going to complain. Friday is here and time to unwind and put my feet up for 2 days.

The good news from our side is that we had a new client signing up with us. He is building a new house in Izinga and we will be assisting him from the time foundations go in until he and his family move in. This should be an exciting project to watch. You might just get some ideas for how to create your own space while adhering to the strict requirements set in place by the home owner associations on your own estate.

The rep from Romo fabrics stopped by our office to see us. She will keep our fabric library up to date with the latest imported fabric ranges. Beautiful fabrics and we can't wait to use them.We also met with a local Durban company who will print wallpaper to any spec, any design and any colour - can't wait to try it. Who knows, maybe you might see a Jossi Design signature wallpaper range in the not too distant future. Watch this space...

Lastly, have a fantastic weekend!

Inspired Design

Anyone who has spoken to me knows that I love straight lines in design. Although recently I find myself drawn towards very strong angular shapes. There is something about the complexity of getting these seemingly irregular lines and angles to work together in forming a single structure. Not just on the horizontal and vertical plane - it blows my mind. Not an easy concept to come to terms with, but the results can be amazing.

Look at the Arthouse Cafe, by designer Joey Ho, and you see what I mean. This severely angular screen creates such a dramatic impact that it is almost irrelevant what else is happening in the space.

Photography is by Mr. Wu Yong Chang.

Good News from Craig!

Fantastic news from me! The file that has been haunting me to get up to date for the last few weeks (maybe months) is done. Finally. I realise this might not be such important news to our loyal readers, but for me it is the highlight of the year so far. Now with that out the way, my mind is free to focus on bringing you more exciting design ideas.

Have a great Thursday evening!

Have you watched either of the Iron Man movies? If you have and are like me, you probably drooled over the mansion that Tony Stark called home. Vast open spaces, smooth concrete finishes, rim-flow pools and cantilevers that defy gravity. Perched on the edge of a cliff and with frameless glass windows you almost feel forced into the water beyond.

Turns out this house was for sale not too long ago - going for a song at $25 million. Had I only known...

Beach House in La Lucia

On Friday afternoon Jocelyn and I went to a site meeting at a house we are working on in La Lucia. It has the most fantastic location and you are literally a stones throw from the water. I won't lie to you though - it was warm on Friday afternoon. Standing in the sun for 45 minutes in Durban heat makes you appreciate air conditioning so much more!

Still a way off from completion, we were meeting with the client to discuss options for a few features and checking that everything way on track. This pictures hardly do it justice!

Update from Jossi Design HQ

With the first (official) week back in the office drawing to a close, we are slowly starting to find our feet again. It's amazing how quickly you fall back into the work routine and very soon the holidays are a distant memory.

This week hasn't been without its challenges; broken driveway gates, an air conditioner that burnt out, a plotter that decided to remove itself from our network and a fridge that leaked all through the kitchen. Fun times.

Not sure how all of you have coped this week, but we're ready for the rest of 2012.

Designer Decor

Here's a seemingly simple lighting solution for you. Japanese designers Nendo presented these lamps made from heated agricultural nets. These nets are normally used to protect crops from strong winds and curious birds, but through heat-forming were able to create clean and contemporary shades.

Just goes to show that sometimes the simplest solution can give the best impact.

Just have a look at this project completed by Xten Architecture. Built on awkward steep sloping grounds in the Hollywood hills, this exclusive home is aptly named "Openhouse". Full height doors and window panes remove all boundaries between indoors and outdoors resulting in continuous movement between the spaces. Clean, smooth lines create an array of strong shapes which lead the eye though the space and to the exterior. Stunning!

The Upstairs

We know how you love an exclusive scoop. Here's a little bit of something that not too many Durbanites have been lucky enough to see yet. Jossi Design has been involved for the past few months on the upstairs area (hence the name) above Spiga D'Oro in the space that was, once upon a time, the old Roman Lounge.

The brief was for an edgy, fun and retro space with a strong graphic element which was brought in by use of original artworks. We haven't had the professional photographer through yet, but we couldn't wait to share these you. Enjoy!

Jossi Design HQ

Nothing like using these first few quiet days of the New Year to do some housekeeping! If not kept in check our archives have a habit of swelling exponentially and, being the fantastically creative designers we are, we're good at creating a mess in the workplace. We can't help it. When the ideas are flowing the last thing we want to do is... *shudder*... filing...

Regardless, to move forward it must be done. Getting there slowly!

Multi-Functional Design

We're getting to the stage where space in our homes is an absolute luxury. Living in cluttered and messy spaces is not for everyone so the clever designers at Jossi Design will share a thought with you. My inspiration started from a chance perusal of the @Home store at Gateway where I saw this little side table and magazine rack.

@Home

So simple and so smart. Not only do form and function work in absolute harmony, but using glass makes the table almost disappear in any space giving the illusion of more space. Here are a few more ideas for you:

Amarant Reading Table

Matt Gagnon Recycled Paper Coffee Table

MAG Table
Do you have an idea for a bespoke multifunctional piece of furniture? Give us a call at Jossi Design and we can bring it to life for you.

Inspired Design

We've all got an account and most respectable working professionals would never admit how much time they spend logged on. Did you ever wonder how Facebook looks from the other side? Just like you sitting at your desk, on your laptop, in your office - those clever programmers and techno wizards at Facebook HQ also have a working environment... and my curiosity got the better of me... so I went looking for it.

Designed by Studio O+A, these open plan offices capture the ethos of social networking and social interaction. Areas are colour coded to distinguish the various teams all within a seamless industrial styled space. Cutting edge style with 1960's retro influence make the Facebook offices a hip space that we would expect it to be.

The pictures tell the story:
