IID General Meeting

On Tuesday 8th May, the second IID General Meeting for 2012 was held at Cobin Light in Windermere Road. Cobin Light specialise in exclusive lighting and offer decorators and designers full support for projects requiring lighting solutions.

Guest speakers were invited to present their various furniture and lighting ranges. Guest speakers included Mr Francesco from Spazio, Mr Georg Kloepfer from XAL lighting, Kenny Karstens spoke on home automation solutions, Karen McEwan from Osram and Mervin Wadsworth from QLite.

The meeting was very well supported by the members and we are hoping to keep the momentum of support for the remainder of the year.

House in Westville

We have recently completed another inspirational residential project. It was fantastic to have been involved in the process from the very beginning:  we saw the existing building being demolished; we worked with the architects on the new layouts; we designed the bathrooms; completed the ceiling and lighting layouts and chose all the finishes and fittings.

We worked on this project from the inception through to hanging the curtains, putting out the final cushions and hanging the last artwork.

We have become good friends with this client and wish this family true happiness in their new home

Designer Decor

Here's a seemingly simple lighting solution for you. Japanese designers Nendo presented these lamps made from heated agricultural nets. These nets are normally used to protect crops from strong winds and curious birds, but through heat-forming were able to create clean and contemporary shades.

Just goes to show that sometimes the simplest solution can give the best impact.

The Upstairs

We know how you love an exclusive scoop. Here's a little bit of something that not too many Durbanites have been lucky enough to see yet. Jossi Design has been involved for the past few months on the upstairs area (hence the name) above Spiga D'Oro in the space that was, once upon a time, the old Roman Lounge.

The brief was for an edgy, fun and retro space with a strong graphic element which was brought in by use of original artworks. We haven't had the professional photographer through yet, but we couldn't wait to share these you. Enjoy!

Inspired Design

We've all got an account and most respectable working professionals would never admit how much time they spend logged on. Did you ever wonder how Facebook looks from the other side? Just like you sitting at your desk, on your laptop, in your office - those clever programmers and techno wizards at Facebook HQ also have a working environment... and my curiosity got the better of me... so I went looking for it.

Designed by Studio O+A, these open plan offices capture the ethos of social networking and social interaction. Areas are colour coded to distinguish the various teams all within a seamless industrial styled space. Cutting edge style with 1960's retro influence make the Facebook offices a hip space that we would expect it to be.

The pictures tell the story:

Rather Busy Monday!

I don't know what it is about Mondays. Doesn't matter where you work or what you do, Mondays have a habit of throwing you curveballs all day long.

I found myself all over the place today. A brief stop in at the office in the morning, then it was off to Hillcrest for a site meeting, then back to the office by way of one of our tile suppliers, cup of tea (yay!), dropped of tiles on site, back to the office, loaded the car again, then off to site in Musgrave to check a curtain installation and drop off some bed lamps, then off to South Beach to drop off 2 (heavy!) rugs for a client to approve and finally back to the office again. Don't know about the staff members, but I am knackered.

If you don't believe me, I have pictures to prove it!

Penthouse on South Beach - A very Bright Kitchen

House in Hillcrest - Pool House & Rondavel
House in Musgrave - Bedside Lamp Bases (Need to find a shade!)
House in Musgrave - Curtains & TV Unit

That brings us to the end of Monday. Just enough time to wind down for the day before it all starts again tomorrow. Bring it on!

Designer Lighting

Lighting. Probably the most important element in enhancing your interior, whether it be subtle ambient lighting, feature spot lights or even your dimmable downlights. It sets the mood and shows off your designer interior by attracting attention and visually leading the eye through a space.

Well... that's the conventional theory behind lighting anyway. Those clever designers at European design studio Moooi are known for pushing the norm. How would you feel about being greeted by one of these life-size floor standing lamps on entering a room? Standing at 2.4 meters tall, you certainly need a bit of space for this fella.

You want to make a statement? This should do it.
