Interior Concept Proposal

It appears as though I have been very bad at keeping this blog updated recently, sincere apologies to our faithful followers.

I met with a manager at the Wild Coast Sun two weeks ago, they had asked Jossi Design to quote on the refurbishment of their Slots Prive Area. An exciting prospect to get involved with some work at the casino. I managed to convert our PowerPoint Presentation into a little movie for you to enjoy - sorry there's no sound, but you'll get the gist of it.

Have a great week!

Inspired Design

I am completely obsessed with this building! The main elevation has almost a children's drawing quality to it - it's such a simple silhouette but then has the offset glass panels to the one side making it sophisticated and edgy. Inside, the structural bits and pieces have been carefully incorporated to give an intelligent, cohesive design solution.

This building was designed in Berlin by Stefan Braunfels Architekten.

Stress & Interior Design

I suppose until you completely understand what a profession entails you won't ever understand the stress that goes on behind the scenes. Our job is not all shopping and fabric launches I assure you!

Deadlines. Deadlines strike fear into the heart of any interior designer. Things have to happen by a certain date; drawings need to be done, quotes need to be received, contractors need to be chased, clients need to attended to, payments need to be made, furniture needs to be sourced and emails need to be answered. And that is just for one job! Multiply that by however many projects you have on the go at any moment and you will suddenly find that an 8 hour day is just not even an option any more.

Stress is unavoidable, but it's how we deal with it that sets us apart from each other. We all have different ways of coping, but irrespective of how bogged down and hopeless it sometimes feels the sun still rises and sets each day. Although it's never as soon as we like, hard work is always rewarded when the time is right. Take my advice and try not to stress your life away, it's really not worth it. Unless of course you want grey hairs like me!

Deep breath.

You can do it!

Inspiration Strikes

They say that inspiration comes from the strangest places. It's true. You never know where you're going to be or what you're going to be doing, but all of a sudden it hits you! Most of us think about for a few lingering moments and then forget about it, but you actually never know whether it could have been the next big thing.

I find inspiration all over the place. But recently music videos have shown me snatches of creativity that I am dying to incorporate into an interior concept. Have a look at these few screen captures and see if you can figure out where I got them from.

Anyone who has spoken to me knows that I love straight lines in design. Although recently I find myself drawn towards very strong angular shapes. There is something about the complexity of getting these seemingly irregular lines and angles to work together in forming a single structure. Not just on the horizontal and vertical plane - it blows my mind. Not an easy concept to come to terms with, but the results can be amazing.

Look at the Arthouse Cafe, by designer Joey Ho, and you see what I mean. This severely angular screen creates such a dramatic impact that it is almost irrelevant what else is happening in the space.

Have you watched either of the Iron Man movies? If you have and are like me, you probably drooled over the mansion that Tony Stark called home. Vast open spaces, smooth concrete finishes, rim-flow pools and cantilevers that defy gravity. Perched on the edge of a cliff and with frameless glass windows you almost feel forced into the water beyond.

Turns out this house was for sale not too long ago - going for a song at $25 million. Had I only known...

Designer Decor

Here's a seemingly simple lighting solution for you. Japanese designers Nendo presented these lamps made from heated agricultural nets. These nets are normally used to protect crops from strong winds and curious birds, but through heat-forming were able to create clean and contemporary shades.

Just goes to show that sometimes the simplest solution can give the best impact.

Just have a look at this project completed by Xten Architecture. Built on awkward steep sloping grounds in the Hollywood hills, this exclusive home is aptly named "Openhouse". Full height doors and window panes remove all boundaries between indoors and outdoors resulting in continuous movement between the spaces. Clean, smooth lines create an array of strong shapes which lead the eye though the space and to the exterior. Stunning!

Multi-Functional Design

We're getting to the stage where space in our homes is an absolute luxury. Living in cluttered and messy spaces is not for everyone so the clever designers at Jossi Design will share a thought with you. My inspiration started from a chance perusal of the @Home store at Gateway where I saw this little side table and magazine rack.

@Home

So simple and so smart. Not only do form and function work in absolute harmony, but using glass makes the table almost disappear in any space giving the illusion of more space. Here are a few more ideas for you:

We've all got an account and most respectable working professionals would never admit how much time they spend logged on. Did you ever wonder how Facebook looks from the other side? Just like you sitting at your desk, on your laptop, in your office - those clever programmers and techno wizards at Facebook HQ also have a working environment... and my curiosity got the better of me... so I went looking for it.

Designed by Studio O+A, these open plan offices capture the ethos of social networking and social interaction. Areas are colour coded to distinguish the various teams all within a seamless industrial styled space. Cutting edge style with 1960's retro influence make the Facebook offices a hip space that we would expect it to be.

The pictures tell the story:

Designer Decor

If you are considering a sculptural artwork for your home there is no one I would recommend more than Astrid Dahl. Her unique aesthetic and sensitivity when working with clay is unlike anything we have seen before. Striking organic shapes are deceptively strong offering striking silhouettes in white clay.

Inspired Design

All my internet trawling has paid off again - have a look at this masterpiece by ONG&ONG Singapore. This residence offers a calm balance between interior and exterior spaces. The ground floor incorporates the living and dining areas with free views to the pool and manicured garden beyond. A central staircase leads upstairs to the bedrooms and family area on the first floor and finally a spiral staircase to roof terrace above. The house has a strong horizontal element to it with clean lines creating a sense of space. For me this is a perfect example of why one shouldn't over decorate a space. Keep it simple and keep it functional.

If this sense of style and elegance is something you would like to see adapted to your own home interior be sure to contact the team at Jossi Design!
